The APA format
Pattern
Last name, A. A. (Host). (Year, Month Day). Episode title (Season #, Episode #) [Audio podcast episode]. In Podcast name. Producer. URL
- Host as author with (Host).
- Episode numbers in parentheses after the title.
- [Audio podcast episode] or [Video podcast episode].
- URL of the episode page, not the app.
A real example
Reference entry
Koenig, S. (Host). (2014, October 3). The alibi (Season 1, Episode 1) [Audio podcast episode]. In Serial. This American Life. https://serialpodcast.org/season-one/1/the-alibi
In-text citation
(Koenig, 2014, 12:10)
When details are missing
- No numbers: leave out the parentheses.
- A quotation: time stamp: (Koenig, 2014, 12:10).
Common mistakes
- The podcast name in plain text. APA italicizes the podcast and leaves the episode plain.
- An app link. Use the podcast’s own episode page where there is one.
Or let Format do it.
Choose Podcast episode and fill in the host, episode, podcast, numbers, producer, date and link. Format writes the References entry and the in-text citation in APA 7, exactly as shown above, and builds the References page when you export to Word or PDF. MLA and APA are free.
Questions
How do I cite a whole podcast?
The host as author, the years it ran, the podcast title in italics, [Audio podcast], the producer and URL.
What if the episode has an executive producer, not a host?
Use the person in that role, with (Executive Producer).
