- Page inside the brackets in the text: [1, p. 112].
A real example
Reference
[1] M. Walker, Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. Scribner, 2017.
In-text citation
[1, p. 112]
When details are missing
- Editors: A. Last name, Ed., before the title.
- No date: (n.d.) at the end.
A second edition
In-text citation

Common mistakes
- Alphabetical order. IEEE lists references by number, in order of first citation.
- Pages in the reference. For a whole book, pages go in the citation, not the reference.
Or let Format do it.
Type or paste the ISBN and Format fetches the author, title, publisher and year from Open Library. Format writes the References entry and the in-text citation in IEEE, exactly as shown above, and builds the References page when you export to Word or PDF. IEEE is part of Pro, $4 a month or $29 a year; MLA and APA are free.
Questions
Do I need the publisher’s city?
Format follows the IEEE Reference Guide examples it is tested against, which give the publisher and year. If your course asks for the city, add it before the publisher.
How do I cite a chapter by the same author?
Cite the book and give the chapter in the citation: [1, Ch. 3].
