Chicago citation

How to cite a chapter in an edited book in Chicago.

In Chicago, a chapter note gives the chapter author, the chapter title in quotation marks, “in” and the book title in italics, “ed.” and the editors, the publisher and year in parentheses, and the page. The bibliography entry ends with the chapter’s page range.

Chicago is part of Pro: $4 a month or $29 a year.

The Chicago format

Pattern

Last name, First name. “Title of Chapter.” In Title of Book, edited by First Last, pages. Publisher, Year.

  • Note: “ed.” before the editors; bibliography: “edited by.”
  • Page range in the bibliography sits before the publisher.
  • Three or more chapter authors: the first and “et al.” in notes; all, up to six, in the bibliography.

A real example

Bibliography entry

Aron, Laurent, Marion Botella, and Todd Lubart. “Culinary Arts: Talent and Their Development.” In The Psychology of High Performance: Developing Human Potential into Domain-Specific Talent, edited by Rena F. Subotnik, Paula Olszewski-Kubilius, and Frank C. Worrell, 345–59. American Psychological Association, 2019. https://doi.org/10.1037/0000120-016.

First footnote

Laurent Aron et al., “Culinary Arts: Talent and Their Development,” in The Psychology of High Performance: Developing Human Potential into Domain-Specific Talent, ed. Rena F. Subotnik, Paula Olszewski-Kubilius, and Frank C. Worrell (American Psychological Association, 2019), 350, https://doi.org/10.1037/0000120-016.

Later footnotes

Aron et al., “Culinary Arts,” 350.

When details are missing

  • No DOI: end with the publisher and year.
  • One author for the whole book: cite the book, with the chapter title in the note if it helps.

Common mistakes

  1. Leaving out “In.” Chicago writes In Title of Book in the bibliography.
  2. Pages after the year. In a Chicago bibliography the chapter range comes before the publisher.

Or let Format do it.

Choose Chapter or work in an anthology, or paste the chapter’s DOI, and Format asks for the chapter, the book, the editors and the pages. Format writes the notes and bibliography in Chicago, exactly as shown above, and builds the bibliography page when you export to Word or PDF. Chicago is part of Pro, $4 a month or $29 a year; MLA and APA are free.

Questions

How do I shorten the note?

Last name, a short form of the chapter title in quotation marks, and the page: Aron et al., “Culinary Arts,” 350.

Does the book title get shortened?

Not in the short note. The short note names the chapter, not the book.
